Approach The Job Market Professionally
Many people believe that when you get out of prison there is no hope for you in the job market. I’m here to tell you that it’s not true. Sure it is harder for a person with a criminal background to obtain a job, but it’s not impossible. You just have the know how to approach the job market professionally. This is where I come in. I can give you tips that will improve your chances on obtaining the job you deserve.
First: You need to reinstate yourself into the working class pipeline. You absolutely have to obtain a government form of identification. This includes a driver’s license or a state issued identification card. It must show current address information. Most employees will not consider you for a job if they cannot prove where you live. The answer to the question that is in your head right now is no. Companies will not accept an expired drivers license (or state ID) even if the information is still correct on it. To obtain a drivers license (or state ID) you need to contact your local state Motor Vehicle Department. Even if you will never be able to receive a driver’s license again in your life, you can still receive a state ID.
Second: In the job market you are now considered a sales person. The product that you are trying to sell is yourself. The question here is: why should anyone hire you?
If you do not know the answer to that question then you have already failed. The answer is going to take some major thought on your part. You need to make a list of skills you do well. What are some things you have done in the past? (that are not criminal acts) Are you artistic? Do you have computer skills? Can you work outside in the heat? Can you be to work on time every time? It is important to know these things. A person with computer skills is probably not the best candidate for a wood working position.
Each month I will bring some thoughts to your attention on how to successfully reintegrate. From experience and personal knowledge I can help you. All comments are welcome. Contact me: Dan @ DC Carpentry, PO Box PO Box 31583, Phoenix AZ 85032 http://DCCarpentry.us
