Life Imitating Art: New Book May Send Author to Prison
A new book and website may prove to be the last straw for Asante Kahari. Author Asante Kahari is best known for his book, “The Birth of a Criminal”. He is the first author in United States history ever to go to prison for writing a book, a work of fiction. Since his release in 2007 he has been fighting the urge to release his new works, “Hustlers Paradise” and “Harlem Gangstress”, both works of fiction.
“My biggest fear is that my new works of fiction will also be cited by federal authorities as being true,” said Kahari.
FBI investigators have tried relentlessly to convict him of crimes based on his works, according to Kahari. Some of the charges carry no statute of limitations on them.
Kahari was tried and convicted of crimes against the United States when a federal judge in Michigan instructed the jury to interpret his books as works of fact. “In essence, the judge was allowed to change the very fabric of copyright law by changing a work that was copyrighted as fiction to fact,” Kahari said.
Overnight the literary world was turned upside down. His book, “The Birth Of A Criminal”, is being sold for upwards of $400. It is considered a collector’s item. It can now be purchased on his website, asantekahari.com, for 10 dollars. He hopes to use the proceeds from his website to appeal his case to the Supreme Court.
AsanteKahari.com is a full service book publishing website dedicated to selling works from author Asante Kahari and other works of antiquity.
